Idealy this process should be as simple as turning to Google and looking up something like “ keymap” or “ keyboard shortcuts”. To that end, the first step in getting Flirc up and running is to determine what keyboard commands do what actions on your media center. Determining Your KeymapĪlthough the Flirc configuration software does thoughtfully include button keymaps for Kodi/XBMC, Boxee, Windows Media Center, Amazon Fire TV, and even mapping for standard keyboard media keys (and we appreciate that thoughtfulness) it’s good to know how to look up and study a keymap without the assistance of the software so that you can effectively map anything to the Flirc (and not just the pre-mapped entries they provide). Let’s look at how to figure out what your device’s keymap is and then how to use Flirc to link the existing keymap with your remote. In order to configure Flirc properly you’ll need three things: the Flirc dongle/software, the remote you want to use with your media center, and a list of the keyboard inputs and shortcuts the media center software in question uses. This article describes how to add customs buttons to your harmony remote which you can then map to a custom keyboard combination on flirc (e.g. You see there is a fundamental problem when it comes to linking your typical universal or TV remote to a media center system like a Raspberry Pi running Kodi/XBMC, an Amazon Fire TV, a computer running Plex or Windows Media Center, or the like: these devices are either optimized for their own special remote (such as the bluetooth remote that comes with the Amazon Fire TV) or they are optimized for keymaps that map onto a keyboard (like Kodi/XBMC and Windows Media Center). The Flirc unit is far more clever than a simple storage unit though and works as an absolutely ingenious solution to the problem of linking IR-based remotes to media center software. At first glance it would be remarkably easy to confuse the Flirc unit with an actual thumb drive as the clear case, visible circuit board, and the IR receiver points (that look much like LED indicator lights) all strongly echo the design of thumb drive storage. The other issue is the fact, that the Flirc/Kodi profile doesn't fully work for you.Flirc ($20) is a tiny USB dongle about half the size of a traditional thumb drive. ![]() You don't press anything on your physical keyboard connected to the PC. As long as you use the same after recording it should work. Go to the assign button menu, select PS4, click on the MENU button, and assign it as INFO in the FLIRC device. Edit your PS4 activity to use the FLIRC device to control your PS4. You will need to have the Flirc GUI installed, here are installation instructions. It (mostly) doesn't matter which device profile you configured on the remote. The brand is FLIRC, and the model is XBMC. Jason Kotzin Septem18:54 Follow To set up Flirc we have to program it to the remote control you want to use it with. I need to use the Full keyboard controller as I need to be able to make key combinations as Ctrl+X, etc. I want to control MPC-BE with my Harmony Companion remote control. So press the button on the remote you want to be associated with letter P. 1 Posted JanuHi, I'm having a problem that should be simpel to solve. It should start blinking and you should see a prompt at the bottom to press a button on the remote. Then on the keyboard in the GUI, you press the key with P. ![]() So, for example, if you want Flirc to "press" the letter "p", then you need to launch the Flirc software, go to Controllers menu and select Full keyboard. It's up to you to teach it what it has to do with the IR signals sent by your remote. I’m considering Sevenhugs Smart X, hefty price tag though. The Elite remote in my opinion is lacking limited and could be more intuitive. FLIRC is nice to have, has some limitations. ![]() It doesn't care if you're using Harmony, some other universal remote or some dedicated remote for some device. I use both, Hub ( I don’t use the remote anymore, just smartphone and voice) it is more functional has endless uses and easier to use. Besides the few built-in profiles which are predefined for a quick start with Kodi or FireTV, Flirc doesn't make any assumptions regarding the IR signals. I think you've misunderstood how does the Flirc work.
